Kristine Mighion MD, MBA

Managing Director & CEO

Dr. Mighion is Managing Director and CEO of Healthcare Consultants International (HCI). She has over 20 years experience consulting in the health care arena with physician practices, hospitals and health systems, Universities, and medical product, technology, pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Her areas of expertise include business and regulatory planning, strategy and business development, and product and technology development and design. Prior to heading up HCI, Dr. Mighion worked in corporate banking and in the health care divisions of three internationally recognized consulting firms. She was also the Creator and Host of Intimetv’s Healthcare Executive Show, a live online talk show educating and informing health care executives nation-wide. Dr. Mighion earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Princeton University, her MBA with a concentration in Finance from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and her MD from Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine.

Ana Handshuh has led several health plan teams to achieve initial and ongoing accreditation with various accrediting bodies. Her background includes accreditation, regulatory compliance, quality, core measures, care management, benefit design and bid submission, revenue management, communications, community-based care management programs, and technology integration. Throughout her career Ms. Handshuh has provided leadership and strategy on projects and collaborations with health plans, physicians, risk entities, and hospital health care systems. She has worked with both single and multi specialty surgery centers. Barbara has deep expertise in regulatory compliance with an emphasis on quality and risk management activities. Christine Gallagher RN, BSN, CNOR

Christine Gallagher, RN, BSN, CNOR has been active in the ambulatory surgery center community for over 35 years. Her career includes development and operational management of multi-specialty and multi-site ASCs with emphasis on assuring quality care within regulatory guidelines. Additionally, she has specialized in compliance to licensing, certification, accreditation standards and guidelines, including Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) and credentialing, privileging, and peer review. Her skills include needs assessment of new or established settings, understanding and establishing priorities, delegating tasks, and motivating teams to reach for their best and to follow through to ensure success. She has opened 5 new ASCs in California and has consulted on numerous projects. Since 1998, Chris has been an AAAHC surveyor with privileges for accreditation including Medicare-deemed status, ambulatory surgery and office- based surgery centers, convenient care clinics, dental practices, urgent care centers, diagnostic imaging centers and medical group practices. She is a member of the AAAHC Standards and Survey Procedures Committee and has developed and authored a standards-based policy and procedure manual.

Diane Lecerf MBA

Diane Lecerf, MBA has over 20 years of health care management experience including leadership positions in managed care accreditation, compliance, quality improvement, and performance reporting. She also has a strong background in HEDIS® and CAHPS® reporting, disease management, health outreach, and Medicaid contract compliance. Diane has led accreditation projects for numerous health plans leading to excellent accreditation from NCQA, URAC, and AAAHC. Diane has presented best practice presentations for NCQA, URAC and NAHQ for a variety of quality and performance improvement projects. She has experience assisting a multi-specialty medical practice in achieving patient-centered-medical home (PCMH) recognition and directed the PCMH initiative for a health plan. Additionally, Diane is a surveyor for AAAHC. Her surveyor experience includes review of health plans, dental plans, and ambulatory surgery centers. Diane has a BA in economics from Wellesley College and an MBA from the University of Michigan.

Doug Danenberger

Doug Danenberger has over 30 years of experience with the CMS/Medicare Life Safety Code and Physical Environment requirements in healthcare facilities. His experience ranges from regulatory compliance, inspections, mock surveys, and rulemaking. He has consulted in all health care settings, including ambulatory surgical centers, nursing homes, and hospitals (critical access hospitals, rural hospitals, and large hospital systems). Doug has conducted hundreds of mock surveys for meeting the requirements of accrediting bodies, such as The Accreditation Association (AAAHC, AAHHS), HFAP, DNV, and The Joint Commission. His employment history includes roles with the Illinois Fire Marshal, Illinois Department of Public Health, Rolf Jensen and Associates, and Life Safety Resources. Hugh Norsted DDS

Dr. Norsted’s is on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dental Group Practice and served as President from 2001-2002. He currently chairs their Education Program/Committee. Dr. Norsted also served as a pre-clinical instructor for eight years at the University Of Minnesota School of Dentistry, and he became credentialed as an accreditation surveyor in the late 1980’s. His memberships include the American Dental Association, Minnesota Dental Association, Northside Dental Society, Minneapolis District Dental Society, and the American Academy of dental Group Practice. Jerome (Jerry) C. Short RPH,MPH

Jerry was a surveyor for the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) for 15 years, from 1998-2013, focusing on primary care organizations such as community health, student health, tribal health center and military health. He also participated in a variety of AAAHC committees and educational activities. In addition to surveying, Jerry has consulted with numerous primary health care organizations during the past 20 years and made presentations at national and regional conferences on various health care management topics. Jerry served as a U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Officer attaining the rank of Captain and is a registered pharmacist in the state of Washington. Jerry’s active duty experience included assignments as Chief Pharmacist for several Indian Health Service (IHS) hospitals, regional pharmacy consultant, Assistant IHS Clinical Research Director, and administrator and governing board member in several IHS hospital and ambulatory care facilities. He completed his 30 year career as the IHS Program Manager for Accreditation and Certification for all IHS hospitals and ambulatory care facilities. Jerry was the director of a major research project evaluating pharmacists for expanded primary patient care duties and co-authored the 1st edition of the Indian Health Service Medical Staff Credentialing Resource Handbook. Michael Peabody MBA

Michael has over 30 years of health care management experience, entering the ambulatory surgical industry in 1997 as administrator of a six operating room freestanding surgery center. Prior to that, he spent 15 years in various hospital management positions. Michael has experience in multi-site facility management, de novo development, operations and consulting. Furthermore, he has extensive experience in the areas of policies and procedures, state licensure, Medicare certification and AAAHC accreditation preparation including mock surveys. Michael is currently certified as a Medicare surveyor for the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and serves both as a survey chairperson and a surveyor trainer. Michael also is a member of the AAAAHC Corporate Alliance Survey team. Susan Griffin

Susan Griffin is an AAAHC Surveyor for health plan, Medical Home, primary care and ambulatory surgery center accreditation/certification. She is a member of the AAAHC Standards and Survey Procedure Committee and actively participates in the continuous update to accreditation standards. Susan’s consulting expertise lies in assisting health care organizations in a variety of initiatives, including achieving accreditation, improving operations, transforming to a Medical Home, and complying with regulatory entities such as CMS/Medicare, Medicaid, OIR and AHCA. Terry King MD

Consultant

Dr. King is a board-certified Family Physician with 29 years of clinical experience.  He has practiced in several clinical settings to include primary care, emergency medicine, student health and urgent care.  He is currently the Medical Director for 13 urgent care centers in central South Carolina.  He has 20 years of experience in student health with 17 of those years spent as a director for clinical services.   He also worked as a part-time emergency physician from 1983 until 2005 and full-time emergency medicine physician at a Veterans Administration hospital for 4 years until entering the urgent care field.   Dr. King has been a Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) surveyor since 1995 with most surveys being either student health or United States Coast Guard(USCG).   He has found the AAAHC experience to be most rewarding both personally and professionally.  The student health center where he worked received six consecutive 3-year terms of Accreditation during his tenure.  Dr. King is a Diplomat to the American Board of Family Medicine as well as a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians.

Toni A. Mitchell MD, MBA

Dr. Mitchell has more than thirty years of experience in medical management, beginning as the Medical Director of a Level I trauma center and Chief of Staff at a large academic medical center. She then worked in Washington, D.C. as the chief policy consultant for inpatient services for the Veterans Administration and as a health policy fellow for Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon. More recently, Dr. Mitchell has worked for several years in the medical management arena within managed care. She has been a surveyor for AAAHC since 2010. Dr. Mitchell earned her medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center and obtained her MBA from the University of South Florida.

Katie Carow has over twenty years of experience in strategic and physician resource planning, mergers and acquisitions, business development, marketing and operations. She specializes in developing business strategies based on data-driven evidence. She initiated and led clinical and senior leadership teams to identify service line and technology priorities for future growth based on financial performance and market opportunities. Katie has managed three to five-year planning processes as well as annual tactical plans, and developed aligned physician growth strategies. She has also identified physician specialty and group targets for recruitment, succession planning and retention. Katie has provided planning, analytical, and marketing direction for physicians, hospitals and health systems, and non-profit and government organizations. She has developed business plans, analyzed major markets, facilitated retreats, and led patient satisfaction improvement process. In prior positions, Katie oversaw the planning department, PHO marketing, physician referral call functions, and integrated operations of a $20M PHO with a 500-member multispecialty group. Joel Appleberry MPP

Joel Appleberry specializes in profit enhancement and provider intelligence (particularly implant transaction management) in the area of physician-preferred items by partnering with surgeons, facilities and device manufacturers to ensure providers’ procedures are as financially strong as possible. He facilitates vendor negotiations, implements new pricing, and measures savings/revenue growth by ensuring contract compliance. Joel has worked on development, operational execution, and client attainment for providers’ primary practice areas, including implant acquisition management, designed to assist in the accumulation and interpretation of data at the surgical case level to then identify opportunities for increased profit and growth.
